Transforming a 1970’s Home

A lakefront site sheltered by oak trees inspired the original owner to build an inexpensive vacation retreat. Forty years later, instead of razing the leaky, out of date home, we transformed it in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright’s, to emphasize its connection to the exceptional site. Exterior work included new low pitched roofs, wide horizontal siding and trim, and a garage, all employing natural materials. At the enlarged back porch we chose cable railings for transparency. We added a second floor master bedroom suite and office, and all the interior spaces were fully renovated. The redesigned home is now highly energy efficient, with new windows and doors, 2x6 walls, thick insulation, less air infiltration due to the new siding system, and deep roof over hangs and a pergola that blocks summer sun but allows passive solar gain in the winter.
